Changes
As We Age - or "Why does Dad do that??"
- Sight:
far-sightedness, loss of near-vision, eye diseases, loss of
night-vision are NORMAL. Seniors should have annual eye exams.
- Scent: by
age 65, people have lost one-third of their sense of smell.
- Taste: at
age 35 you have 285 taste buds: at 75, you have less than 60. Seniors
first lose their sense of sweetness (and compensate with excess sugar),
followed by their sense of saltiness (smothering their food in salt).
Hearing:
the major stressor of aging. Volume, frequency, discrimination and
processing all change and can lead to depression. Seniors feel cut-off
and can no longer join in group conversations. Seniors should have
their hearing tested.
- Touch: the
sense of touch and the need to be touched heightens as we grow older; a
lack can cause isolation to set in.
- Muscles:
reaction time reduces but strength remains. If they're not used,
muscles decay. Walking and swimming are the best exercises for seniors.
- Bones:
osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass, which leads to weak bones that
are vulnerable to fracture. Women are four-times more likely to have
osteoporosis than men (women lose 20% of their bone mass in the 5 years
following menopause). Take vitamin D and drink fortified milk.
- Memory:
brain processes slow down and it becomes more difficult to learn new
things.
